The Denver Front Range, encompassing areas like Elbert and Douglas counties, is a region where the rugged beauty of the American West meets the enduring legacy of cowboy culture. Don’t miss out on 4 of my favorite rodeos near Denver for cowboy fun this year!
In the heart of Colorado, the cowboy way of life remains a steadfast tradition. Ranchers rise with the sun. They tend to their herds and maintain the land with a dedication that has been passed through generations. This enduring spirit is palpable in the daily rhythms of ranch life. While we might not all live on a ranch. It’s still a blast to channel your inner cowboy and embrace one of the reasons why we all fell in love with this beautiful state by going to the best rodeos near Denver.
From bull riding to barrel racing, you’ll never feel more like an American, than throwing on your boots and attending rain or shine. For those looking to experience the cowboy lifestyle firsthand, there are plenty of opportunities in the Denver Front Range. Whether you’re a longtime rodeo fan or just buying your first pair of boots, here are some great ways to connect with the culture:
The National Western Stockshow: Downtown literally in the heart of Denver, they host “the best 10 days of January” when the stock show comes to town. This event is huge. It has rodeos with stiff competition and nationally ranked riders. You can also see livestock shows, tons of vendors from all across the country. You can even ride a mechanical bull. We’ve gone year after year and its such a fun break to be able to attend a rodeo in Denver during the dead of winter. You can even get your boots shined and eat a smoked turkey leg.
The Elizabeth Stampede: Is honestly my personal favorite rodeo near Denver (I may be partial since I live here), but if you want to experience some REAL cowboy fun and great local moonshine head out to Elizabeth typically the first weekend in June. Awesome music artist such as Chase Rice have even played concerts at the Elizabeth Stampede. It is well worth the drive, I’ll see you there!
Cowboy Up In Kiowa: Typically held towards the end of June, the Cowboy Up Rodeo is still one place where you can take the whole family and know that the National Anthem will play, and American Flag will fly. It is truly an American sport. Cowboy Up in Kiowa is proud to keep this tradition alive. Last time we were there it down poured but the concert jammed out regardless and it was totally worth it!
Douglas County Fair & Rodeo: A large rodeo close to Denver is the Douglas County Fair. Its also accompanied by all the carnival fun. The Douglas County Fair is held annually in Castle Rock. This event is a staple of cowboy culture in the area, featuring rodeo competitions, livestock shows, and traditional Western festivities. The Douglas County Fair & Rodeo is typically the last week in July running into the first few days of August. Tickets sell out early because it also hosts the carnival rides so make sure you get tickets sooner than later.
Whether you’re looking to experience a rodeo near Denver, visit a historic ranch, or dress up for a western photography session, there’s countless ways to embrace your inner cowboy.
The cowboy culture in Denver is not a relic of the past but a living, breathing tradition. A tradition that continues to evolve while honoring its roots. Immerse yourself by going to local events, and you’ll gain an appreciation of the cowboy spirit that has always been Colorado’s identity.
